Golden pen 2004.

The Zlatna penkala (Golden pen), the awards of the Croatian Tourist Board for the best published foreign tourism text, TV or radio show about Croatia, are being awarded today for the first time. At a special ceremony at the Illyrian hall of the “Narodni dom” (National hall) twenty eight foreign tourism journalists from sixteen countries will receive the valuable award from the Croatian Premier Dr. Ivo Sanader, who will in this manner thank them for their numerous affirmative texts, television and radio shows about our country. These most definitely contributed to the rapid post-war recovery of Croatian tourism.

The award was presented for two categories, for printed and electronic media, with a four-day study tour around Croatia organised for all award winners. For every true devotee of the journalist profession this acknowledgement will have an added symbolic value because of the fact that Croatia, along with the cravat, is the home of the fountain pen and the mechanical graphite pencil. Namely, inventor engineer Slavoljub Penkala who worked and lived in Zagreb, in 1906 invented the first mechanical graphite pencil in the world and in 1907 he invented the first fountain pen in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century Penkala’s pencils and fountain pens were exported to over 70 countries in the world.

The Croatian Tourist Board, from it founding in 1992, has played host to numerous media representatives from throughout the world. During the year 2004 alone, more than 880 foreign journalists from 24 countries visited Croatia organised by the Croatian Tourist Board. The assessment of the value of the published written material which ensued as a result of these study tours amounts to about 55 million Euros, while aired TV and radio reports about 45 million Euros which in total is an impressive 100 million Euros.

Based on the decision of the Croatian Tourist Board two winners (one from each category) shall receive the Zlatna penkala grand prix (Golden pen grand prix) for the best written and TV tourism material about Croatia published abroad, while the remaining journalists shall receive the Zlatna penkala (Golden pen) for the best published tourism text about Croatia for a particular market.
